Remote points for POS unable to connect to a network
« on: January 15, 2018, 09:30:35 AM »
Received another interesting question from a customer in Namibia :

The scenario is as follows :

The backoffice or main office is about 300 meters away from a curio shop. The customer wishes to use 4POS for the curio store but due to the distance, a network is not doable. (Network cable maximum distance is 110m) Yes, you can add repeaters etc, but you also have to consider roads etc on the path which will mean lots of issues & costs.

An easy solution is :

1. Set the terminal (Preferably a Laptop) up on the network with a cable in the main office.
2. Configure the terminal fully with sharing etc.
3. Test the connections.

Now, on a daily basis, simply unplug the terminal from the network & carry it to the venue. (Curio shop)

Throughout the day, you will be able to do cash sales (Not account sales). At the end of the day, you can carry the laptop back to the main office, plug into the network & then do your cashups & dayend as per normal.

The same can also be done with 4POSTouch. This would be ideal for a wedding venue or even for a golf course that cannot leave equipment on the 9th hole. As you would have seen by now, 4POSTouch can run offline & then connect to the server when back online.

1. When you connect a POS PC to the 4POS server (Database) you will need to have a valid licence for that PC.
2. The "IP Address" or "PC Name" you use has to be the same of the pc that you are connecting. In other words, 4POS will check that the pc that you are connecting to the server / database has the same IP or PC Name as what has been registered in 4POS.

PS. You can either use the PC Name (same as the actual name of the pc OR the IP address of that PC...)

Some PIC attachments to explain...

If the PC name or IP address is not found in the 4POS database as a registered PC, the following message will be shown :

"4POS has found that you are attempting to access the 4POS database from a PC that is not registered with a valid 4POS voucher. Please contact your 4POS support Team...."

I imagine that you need a static IP for this to work, right?

You can use a static IP or the pc name - Eg. POS1

As long as you can access the drive over the network : Eg : \\pos1\c\4pos\
